Ava Police Officer indicted on sexual assault charges

An Ava police officer has been indicted by a Jackson County Grand Jury on multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse.
According to Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr, the indictment alleges that 47-year-old William Fenton, of Murphysboro, had sexual contact with a minor back in July. He was arrested by state police Tuesday and has since posted bond.
He’s been charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault and three counts of aggravates sexual abuse. If found guilty and convicted, Fenton faces over twenty years in prison. Fenton’s first appearance in court will be January 3, 2018.
