Cook, Lloyd named to MVC Most Improved Team

ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Valley released the MVC All-Bench and MVC Most-Improved rosters on Wednesday.  Senior Tyler Smithpeters was named the captain of the MVC All-Bench team, adding to his Sixth Man of the Year honor that he was awarded yesterday.  Sophomore guard Aaron Cook and Junior guard Sean Lloyd were named to the MVC Most-Improved squad.
Smithpeters played in all 31 games this season with five starts.  He averaged 7.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, and 2.3 apg throughout the 2017-2018 season.  In conference play, Smithpeters averaged 8.9 ppg and he shot .398 from the 3-point line.  Smithpeters had 48 assists in 18 conference games (3 starts), to his 31 turnovers.
Cook improved in nearly every part of his game this season.  Cook was forced into the starting point guard role at the beginning of the season due to an injury to Marcus Bartley.  Cook would take to the bench upon Bartley’s return in early December but reemerged as the starting shooting guard later that month. His shooting percentage increased from .333 in the 16-17 season to .443 this year; similarly, Cook’s 3-point shooting went up from .185 to .391.  At the line, Cook improved his shooting percentage from .690 to .776.  In the 16-17 season, Cook averaged 3.0 ppg, 0.9 apg, 0.8 rpg, and 1.0 spg.  This year, he pushed this numbers up to 9.9 ppg, 2.5 apg, 2.3 rpg, and 1.5 spg.
Lloyd was called upon to become a defensive leader by Coach Barry Hinson this season which led to an All-Defensive Team selection yesterday.  Lloyd improved his shooting as well; he shot .395 last season, this year he shot .475.  On the 3-point line, Lloyd improved from .344 to .375.  His free throw shooting received a slight boost as well going from .690 to .727.  Lloyd improved in all five major statistical categories.  In 16-17, Lloyd averaged 7.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg. 0.9 apg, 0.2 bpg, and 1.0 spg.  This season, Lloyd averaged 11.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg. 2.1 apg, 0.5 bpg, and 1.5 spg.
