Time to Gamble on TO?

Time to Gamble on TO?

Saddled with a 1-15 record from last year and choosing Quarterback Sam Bradford with the # 1 pick in the draft, isn’t it about time for the St. Louis Rams to go out and get a big-time receiver?

Here is my case for the Rams bringing in Terrell Owens for at least a look during training camp or signing him to a one year, incentive-laden deal.

The Rams have only potential at the wide receiver position. Guys like Donnie Avery, Brandon Gibson, and Laurent Robinson are not exactly household names.  Drafted newcomer Marty Gilyard could be that “go-to guy” but that might not develop immediately.

Bradford is replacing Marc Bulger who, for seven years, was rushed, hurried, sacked, beaten up and knocked out behind a Rams’ offensive line that doesn’t rank among the league’s best.  So, Bradford will also be rushed, hurried, sacked, beaten up but hopefully not knocked out.  So let’s give Bradford a # 1 wide-out that has caught passes from the likes of Steve Young, Donovan McNabb, and Tony Romo.

TO is a big target and isn’t the deep threat he once was but lining Owens up on one side sure would make defensive coordinators take notice and perhaps free up Avery or Gibson.

Granted, team after team (the latest being the wide receiver challenged Seattle Seahawks) have said “no thanks” to Owens.  Fans in Philly have booed him, in Big D he is considered a “team cancer” and in Buffalo he was barely there long enough to catch a case of frost-bite.

Owens has to wonder how many more chances he will get and Rams’ Coach Steve Spagnuolo could give him the old “we need you and nobody else will even give you a chance to play” speech.  If things go south, cut him loose.  However, maybe he could lead the Rams to a .500 season or maybe more.

I say it’s worth a shot, what have you got to lose except more football games and you’re going to do plenty of that with TO or without TO.
