A Metropolis man was arrested Friday after police found eight pounds of marijuana and a handgun during a traffic stop.

It happened about 1:30 Friday morning on Massac Creek Road.

Sheriff’s Deputies initially responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a car parked in the middle of the road and witnessed a passenger throwing items out of the window and into a ditch nearby.

Michael Russel told police that everything was his. The office subsequently found a backpack containing eight pounds of cannabis and a 9 millimeter handgun inside of the car.

Russell was taken to the Massac County Detention Center on charges of possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon, and possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver.
