U of Illinois trustees OK student health insurance increases

URBANA, Ill. (AP) – University of Illinois students will see an increase in their health insurance costs for the upcoming academic year.
The university’s Board of Trustees set student health insurance premiums during its Thursday meeting. The steepest increase will come at the University of Illinois’ Springfield campus, where premiums will rise 63 percent, going up to $866 per semester from $336. School officials say that’s because of an enrollment decline in the insurance plan and increases in claims.
Students at the Urbana-Champaign campus will see prices go up 20 percent, to $554 per semester for undergraduates and $696 for graduate students. University of Illinois at Chicago students will see an 18 percent hike. Their costs now will be $673 per semester.
Students can opt out if they prove they have comparable coverage elsewhere.
