Carbondale Police investigate shootings, weapons arrest

CARBONDALE, IL. (WJPF) — Police in Carbondale are investigating a pair of non-fatal shootings and a weapons arrest that may or may not be connected.
The first incident happened around 6:10 Monday night when officers responded to Carbondale Memorial Hospital after a report of a gunshot victim. An investigation revealed the victim suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound while in the 400 Block of East Chestnut Street.
During this same time, different officers were conducting a different investigation at the Fields Apartments in the 700 Block of South Lewis Lane after reports of a person with a gun. There, officers arrested 29-year-old Phillip Howard and recovered a pair of guns.
About two hours later, another victim arrived at Carbondale Memorial hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. This shooting occurred in the 400 Block of East Ashley Street, which is adjacent to East Chestnut Street, where the first shooting took place.
Neither shooting victim is being identified at this time. All three investigations are currently active and ongoing. And police say while there isn’t any information available to connect the incidents, there is also no information to rule out that they are related.
