Harrison named to MVC Scholar-Athlete team

ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois junior pitcher Brad Harrison was named to the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference’s baseball Scholar-Athlete team, the league announced Tuesday. Harrison holds a 3.64 GPA in Civil Engineering. The scholar-athlete teams were voted on by the conference’s baseball sports information contacts and announced by the league office today.
Harrison (O’Fallon, Ill.) was SIU’s Opening Day starter in 2019 and was outstanding on the mound despite being limited with an arm injury. In eight starts and 44.1 innings, Harrison had a 3.05 ERA, which ranked seventh in the MVC, and limited opponents to a .218 average, which ranked fifth. His best three outings of the year were three-straight quality starts against Western Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Illinois, respectively, in which he posted a 1.57 ERA over 23 innings, but injuries limited him to just three starts the rest of the season.
Harrison earned a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team in 2019 after earning a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention team as a sophomore in 2018. As a sophomore, he was a three-time MVC Pitcher of the Week and earned honorable mention All-MVC honors at the end of the year.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Google Cloud Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.  Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
