CLEVELAND — Southern Illinois senior swimmer Matt Ciezczak was named Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Ciezczak won a team-best three events in SIU’s 122-78 Senior Day victory over Evansville last weekend. The Naperville, Ill. native swam a time of 21.70 in the 50-yard freestyle for his first individual win as a Saluki. He also helped Southern to first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.69) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.05).
“It is cool to see someone like that having success and improving all the way up to the very end of his career,” head coach Geoff Hanson said following the Evansville meet. “It’s great for our senior class to feel like they’re leaving the program better than they found it.”
Ciezczak will next compete at the MAC Championships from Mar. 4-7. SIU is set to host the championship meet at Shea Natatorium in Carbondale, Ill.
