Carbondale City Council unanimously approves face mask ordinance

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — The Carbondale City Council has unanimously approved a new ordinance requiring face masks to be worn in all public places.
The new rule is in response to a recent rise  in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Jackson County.
On Friday, Jackson County was named as one of eleven counties statewide to be at the warning level for COVID-19. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, a county enters a warning level when it experiences an increase in two or more COVID-19 risk indicators from the state’s COVID-19 Resurgence Mitigation plan.
According to The City of Carbondale, the new ordinance requires all people within Carbondale engaging in “activity outside of their residence, while other people are present, to wear protective face coverings when it’s not possible to maintain 6’ social distance from others.” The mask requirement will be in effect until the State of Illinois enters Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan, unless repealed sooner by the City.
