URBANA, ILL. (AP) — A central Illinois man accused of murder who was mistakenly released from prison last month is back in custody, authorities said Thursday.
Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman says Darrion White was arrested Thursday in the Chicago suburb of Glenwood by the U.S. Marshals Service. White, 20, was released from Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet on Nov. 13.
White is accused in the Aug. 28, 2018 fatal shooting of 16-year-old David Sankey of Champaign. Also charged in Sankey’s death is Jaquaveon Faust, 24, of Champaign.
Shortly after White’s mistaken release, Heuerman said his department neglected to place a detainer on White with the Department of Corrections for his return to Champaign County once he completed a sentence for illegal gun possession. However, on Thursday, the sheriff said a further internal review of their processes showed the pending murder charge had been relayed to the Department of Corrections.
Although an internal miscommunication meant a detainer letter wasn’t included with the paperwork, Heuerman said a corrections representative told him the pending charge listed on the paperwork should have been enough to keep White from being released.
