Suspect in custody after officer-involved shooting in southeastern Illinois

HARDIN COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) — One person is in custody after a burglary, car theft, and officer involved shooting in southeastern Illinois.
Illinois State Police say the incident started at about 10:12 p.m. Saturday when a Pope County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a possible burglary in progress in Herod. When confronted the suspect ran from the deputy, stealing the deputy’s unmarked squad car in the process.
The stolen squad car was found abandoned at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday near the northern edge of Hardin County.
Illinois State Police say the suspect was found about 50 yards from the car and after a brief encounter, deputies shot at the suspect resulting in a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The suspect was flown to an area hospital. No police officers were hurt.
The incident remains under investigation.
