Illinois State Police have been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting Tuesday in Mt. Vernon.
According to reports, a correctional officer was transporting an inmate to court when the inmate escaped, disarmed the officer and after a brief struggle fired a weapon.
A deputy inside the courthouse saw the incident on video, confronting the inmate and firing his weapon. The inmate was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to St. Louis. The correctional officer received minor injuries. He was treated and released from a local medical facility.
