Former John A. Logan forward Sarion McGee in jail on weapons charges

Former John A. Logan big man Sarion McGee is in jail and being held on $100,000 bond in New York state, facing more than a dozen felony charges after officers say they found him on the Canisius College campus with illegal guns and ammunition.  He was arrested on Sunday, June 12th.  McGee was being recruited by Canisius College to play basketball.

According to prosecutors, Public Safety officers for Canisius College found 23-year-old McGee with two loaded, illegal handguns along with magazines on him and a shotgun, as well as more magazines in his car parked near the school’s Athletic Center.  McGee’s lawyer argues that the guns and magazines were all purchased legally in Wisconsin and Illinois for protection and all of his things were in his car because he had not been been able to move in to his assigned dorm room, having only just arrived in New York a day prior.

Judge Debra Givens, who set McGee’s bail, questioned McGee’s judgement referring to the fact he is majoring in Criminal Justice but either ignored or did not familiarize himself with New York state’s gun laws.
McGee is facing 15 counts and could face anywhere between 3 1/2 years to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Cansius College Athletic Director Bill Maher told The Associated Press that McGee will not be admitted to the school, citing the seriousness of the charges and also noted that while McGee was recruited to play basketball at Canisius, the admissions process was not complete.

Cansius College is located just a little over a mile from the site of a shooting at a supermarket that took place in May that took the lives of 10 people.
