SIU women’s basketball’s Gabby Walker earns MVC postgraduate scholarship

Gabby Walker has been named a 2022 Missouri Valley Conference postgraduate scholarship winner.  The Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee voted to award postgraduate scholarships to a total of four student-athletes, due to their exemplary academic and athletic performances.  Each will receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the Conference.
Walker completed her undergraduate degree at Southern Illinois in December 2018 while majoring in chemistry with a minor in psychology. She has been accepted into SIU’s Ph.D. program in molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry (MBMB) and will begin classes in Fall of 2022.  The St. Charles, Mo., native had a career year for the Salukis, as she scored in double figures in 21 games and averaged 12.3 points per game.  She achieved her highest rebounding average as a Saluki (6.1 per game), and notched three double-doubles this past season. Walker scored a season-high 20 points against UNI on Jan. 15. Walker’s 50.9% field goal percentage was good for fifth in the conference.  She earned honorable-mention all-MVC honors in 2022 and Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team honors in 2022.
To be eligible for consideration, recipients must have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, participated with distinction in a Missouri Valley Conference championship sport for at least two seasons at the nominating institution and must graduate from their institutions within 18 months following selection at the spring meetings of the Faculty Athletics Representative Committee.
Also, the recipients must be accepted for postgraduate studies at an institution of higher learning at the time of receipt of the scholarship.  And, the recipients must have completed eligibility for participation in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which nominated.
