Former Saluki men’s basketball player Sekou Dembele may be headed to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Dembele is coming off the bench for his home country Mali in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament this year.
In one game so far, Dembele has seen just five minutes of action and shot 0-for-1 from the field in a 77-68 win over Nigeria.
Dembele and Mali have a tough road ahead of them, only one team from Africa will qualify for the Paris Olympics in this round of qualifiers.
Dembele came to SIU in 2018 and was redshirted his freshman year. The following two seasons Dembele struggled to see time on the floor, averaging just 6.7 minutes per game in 29 contests. He averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds during his time at SIU.
