ROCKFORD, Ill. (WJPF) – As the weather warms, mosquitos return.
The Illinois Department of Public Health says the first fist mosquitos of the year to test positive for West Nile Virus were found earlier this week in the Rockford area.
Common symptoms of West Nile include fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Most people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms; however, in rare cases, severe illness or even death, can occur. People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.
Last year in Illinois, IDPH reported 69 confirmed human cases of West Nile with 13 human deaths.
