Matt Schark named National Co-Hitter of the Week by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending May 11. Oregon State senior catcher Wilson Weber and Southern Illinois redshirt senior infielder Matt Schark were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Mississippi State junior right-handed pitcher Evan Siary was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Weber finished with week, hitting .471 (8/17), had a .550 on-base percentage and 1.176 slugging percentage, helping lead the Beavers to a 3-0-1 week at Hawaii and Iowa. He recorded four home runs, five runs scored and three walks, while driving in 12 runs. The Gresham, Oregon, native hit safely in all four games during the week, including a four-hit effort in the opener at Iowa. His last hit, a single, drove in the game-winning run. He hit a two-run home run earlier in the game.

He opened the week with a 2-for-3 day at Hawaii, driving in four thanks to a pair of home runs, one of which was a three-run blast in a 7-3 win over Hawaii. He concluded the four-game streak by hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning at Iowa Sunday. The grand slam marked Oregon State’s first hit of the game and put the Beavers up 5-3 at the time.

Schark put together a week to remember for Southern Illinois as he cemented himself in the Saluki record book. The St. Charles, Missouri native recorded five home runs during a weekend series against Evansville with one homer on Friday, three on Saturday and one more on Sunday in helping the Salukis to a series win over the Aces.

Schark’s home run on Sunday put him at the top of the single-season home run list with his 20th of the season. Two at bats later, he tied the single-season RBI mark in program history after driving in his 70th run of the year. He finished the week batting .500 (8-16), slugging 1.500, to go along with a .500 on-base percentage. In total, he drove in 11 runs, scored seven times and drew one walk as Southern went 3-1 on the week.

Siary posted a career-high 15 strikeouts over a career-long eight shutout innings in the Diamond Dawgs’ 4-1 win against No. 24 Ole Miss in the second game of a doubleheader last Friday. He did not walk any Rebels and scattered six hits on a career-high 98 pitches. Prior to Friday, the Columbus, Mississippi, native hadn’t struck out more than six in any of his previous 36 appearances over the course of his career. His strikeout total was the most of any pitcher during conference play this season and ties LSU’s Anthony Eyanson’s performance against North Alabama on March 8 for the most by any SEC hurler in 2025.
