CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – An 78-year-old man is facing battery and assault charges for allegedly attacking protesters in Carbondale.
According to Carbondale Police, Douglas Wells swerved towards the crowd that had gathered Sunday afternoon in the 100 block of West Main Street. After driving by the protestors once, police say Wells returned. When he did, a protester approached his vehicle and Wells discharged pepper spray in the protesters face.
Douglas Wells drove away from the scene and was arrested shortly afterwards at his home.
Wells was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle) and aggravated battery.
